PROGRAM NOTE
“The Nightingale” is a Hans Christian Andersen classic, highlighting the contrast between the value of what is artificial and that of what is real. The story features a host of characters—from an Emperor with his comic gentleman-in-waiting to a poor kitchen maid. I’ve always loved the tale; making the setting to feature flute and harp was a clear choice from the outset. The text is complimented with musical interludes throughout, with a variety of light percussion instruments played by the flutist and harpist which adds extra color and humor.
The longer audio clip is a complete performance; the shorter one is selected excerpts.
Audio credits: Helen Campo, flute, Alyssa Reit, harp and storyteller.
The piece is good for family audiences and is best for ages 2nd grade and up.
