In 2014 my dear friend, a wonderful musician, now a very-well known professor of St. Petersburg State Conservatory Vladimir Orlov asked me to write a piece for his younger students of Rimsky-Korsakov Music College. After numerous discussions we decided that it had to be a suite. It was not simple to understand what kind of suite might be appealing for teenagers nowadays. Finally, I decided that love is the subject that remains appealing in any age. I imagined a young man gently holding his girl, overlooking a valley and whispering to her: “if I only had three wishes, I would bring you to Paris, New York and Rio de Janeiro”.
The suite consists of three movements, each of them is based on a different jazz style.
“Weekend in Paris” is a bosa-nova, “Manhattan. Evening” is a ballade, “Let’s Go To Rio!” Is a catchy samba.
From the moment of its completion suite “Three Wishes” has been arranged several times for various ensembles. I even had a privilege of performing this suite as a part of a jazz trio at “Zink” jazz club in New York City. Version for flute and piano is one of the most sparkling.
Flute part was edited by a wonderful American flutist Inna Leoni. Inna and I recorded this suite in New York in a studio of an exceptional sound engineer Joe Patrych.
