“Pater Patriae” for solo flute, 3332/4331/timp/perc (3) by Victoria Bond
“I have always loved the flute – the timbre of the instrument as well as the wealth of great music written for it. Throughout my life, I have written for the flute, and the composition Pater Patriae is the largest work to date. The title, meaning “Father of the Fatherland,” is a concerto for flute and large wind ensemble, with a text by Dr. Myles Lee, based on George Washington’s own words. Having long admired Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” I decided to apply the same format to our first President. As the fife and drum were integral to the Revolutionary War, I based my work on several melodies and rhythms from the era, incorporating them into the fabric of my own music. As the flute yielded an artistic scope far wider than the fife, I decided to feature the solo flute together with the narrator. About the text, Dr. Lee said:
Pater Patriae is our attempt to encapsulate the essence of Washington’s character as reflected by his courage, relentlessness, and prescience that enabled our nation to survive.”
