“The Bare Minimum” is a musical statement about the mental load: the cognitive and emotional work of managing a household. The thematic material is sweet and good-natured, punctuated by frantic bursts of energy, reflecting the daily whirl of managing seemingly endless minute details that compound into a storm of urgent tasks. The music shifts from a sweet theme to demanding technical passages, winding down to end in exhaustion. Moments of peace and reflection are cut short by the unceasing mundane demands of the day.
Composing for winds is a great joy for me; I studied clarinet at conservatory, and have several years’ experience as a freelance performer and instructor. I find that my ensemble compositions make frequent use of the expressive capabilities of the wind section, and my solo works present a satisfying challenge to the performers while maintaining an abstract narrative.
