“Moon Full, Tide Low” for Alto Flute by Hilary Tann

The piece was completed in 2020 at the request of the Royal Academy of Music as part of the run-up to the 200th-year celebration (2022). The title is from a novice study in mindfulness meditation by the dedicatee, S. Kelly Avants. The piece combines chant-like phrases with bird calls and a reference to the opening of Stravinsky’s “Orpheus” (suggested by Kelley’s husband, Arthur Margolin). Although written for clarinet, the alto flute version seems particularly appropriate. It is a haunting and sometimes melancholic sound well-suited to the subtext of the piece.
